Bosozoku

Posted by Duncan Galbraith (kyoto, Japan) on 22 March 2007 in People & Portraits and Portfolio.

This guy and a bunch of his mates kept buzzing my car yesterday, whilst my wife was driving. 'Bosozoku' translates as 'Violent Running Tribe'. They're basically naughty boys, usually teenagers. They're usually to be found en masse riding dangerously down busy thoroughfares in major cities or acting just as stupidly out on the highways. Although they seldom interfere directly with citizens they do have a penchant for kicking the heck out of other 'gangs'. They're viewed as a recruiting ground for the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) although how much truth lies in that I cant say. These lads seemed harmless enough although my wife did rather forcibly instruct me to stop pointing my lens at them via an open window. I compromised and shot through the (tinted) back window, hence the rather noisy picture. The original is pretty crumby, tried to rescue it via various retro minded tweaks and curves etc before thinking 'sod it', might as well try and do something with it as oppossed to cover up its lack of raw quality. Went down the old vintage avenue, tried to get something which resembled old cine cam footage (colour wise) before the insanity kicked in and I went scratch happy.
